Content Consideration
Empathy is imperative for children to learn and understand what someone else is feeling. When you are in the same situation, you feel unhappy for anyone to force you to accept what you do not like to do.
In addition, nurturing children to be kind and care for everyone when they are helpless, regardless of their age, sex, nationality, or occupation is imperative to children’s personal development.
Here are some examples for a child to learn empathy:
- When a children see someone fall over, you may think the person is hurt, you can ask if they want help
- When children see someone shy and embarrassed in a new environment, you can ask if they want help
- At home, when you see your mother or father is busy with the homework, you can help by doing together
But, it is imperative for children to learn to be empathetic, which isn’t without limitations. They must take precautions about what they are doing and the people who seek help. Children need to protect themselves by considering what and who they are asking for, time, and the surrounding environment, such as when they are asked for or forced to commit criminal activity. When children feel suspicious, they need to be brave enough to say no immediately.
It is encouraged for children to nurture an empathetic character – kindness and taking care of the helpless not only makes you feel happy inside but also makes the world a much nicer place and people live a happier life.
About the author
Jayneen Sanders is not only a mother of three teenagers, but she has been a primary teachers since the 1980s. In the meantime, she has also published over 150 stories for children.
To be both a teacher and a parent inspired her to ask the question of her community: “What are we doing in schools to empower children and protect them from inappropriate touch?” As she realized that we are doing very little for our kids, she decided to help parents, caregivers, and teachers raise awareness of self-protection, and encourage children to speak out.
