Why Reading Habits Matter for Teenagers

Develop a reading routine and select the appropriate books to inspire reading. Sustaining long-term reading habits helps in teens' development.

Reading is essential for everyone, especially beneficial in teens’ development. Nevertheless, many people do not develop a reading routine and fully embrace the advantages of reading books that they can offer. In this article, I will explore the benefits of reading books, examine why teens are losing interest in reading, share the effective strategies to develop a reading routine, selecting the appropriate books to inspire reading, and sustaining long-term reading habits in teens’ development.

Reading Improve Teens Mental Problems

No matter whether you are childish, teenagers or adults, today, for adults, they feel overwhelmed at home from work. For teenagers, many of them are concentrating on the virtual environments – video games and scrolling on screens on social media. For students, they feel like they are struggling to chase the academic results for their degree, setting goals for a decent jobs and a better living environment. Many of them are refusing to develop strong reading habits.

In a study published in Psychological Medicine, researchers from the Universities of Cambridge, Warwick in the UK and Fudan University in China found that reading causes an important factor in teenagers’ development. They found that optimal reading, 12 hours a week, can significantly be helpful for teenagers sense of well-being, reduce the signs of mental problems, such as stress and depressions, enhance attention, and improve teens’ rule breaking behaviour.

They published an article on the University of Cambridge website on 28 June 2023, named “Reading for pleasure early in childhood linked to better performance and mental well-being in adolescence.” At the end of the article, Professor Jianfeng Feng from Fudan University in Shanghai, China, and the University of Warwick UK, have the following quote:

We encourage parents to do their best to awaken the joy of reading in their children at an early age. Done right, this will not only give them pleasure and enjoyment, but will also help their development and encourage long-term reading habits, which may also prove beneficial into adult life.

Reading helps brain development

Australia is the first country in the world to ban children under 16 from using social media on December 10, 2025. Countries that are following or considering these restrictions are France, Denmark, Spain, Norway, Malaysia, and New Zealand. Moreover, many students are prohibited from using the mobile during lessons, and their phones must be placed in a particular place to avoid distracting their concentration.

There are many investigations that showed the obsessive use of social network chatting or playing virtual games can be significantly harmful, especially in childhood and adolescence during their personal development, leading teens to anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, low self-esteem, loneliness, and social isolation.

Teens are vulnerable to social media and virtual gaming world. The more they chat with friends, share videos and photos, and play online games, the more rewards are given for them to spend more time in the virtual world.

Our brain has two modes of behavioral neuroscience: discover mode (for approaching opportunities) and defend mode (for defending against threats), which governs human growth and protection. If a child has more outdoor adventures, such as rock-climbing gyms, parkour or spinner; creative activities such as painting and writing; team-building activities such as teams sports; and intellectual hobbies such as reading can boost teens to develop a better discovery mode.

Through adventuring, different activities can lead teens to learn communicating skills, avoid getting hurt, and learn problem-solving techniques. If teens are growing under a discovery-mode environment, they will develop more creative, curious, challenging, and adventurous personalities.

On the other hand, teens become anti-fragile to the external environment due to addiction to social media or playing video games, causing them to develop an illusion of living in a safe environment (defense mode).

Without real-world interaction with people and environments and gaining experience through success and failure in the real-world, it is difficult for teens to develop creativity, curiosity, and problem-solving techniques to cope with the challenges in their lifelong personal development.

Research Shows Few Teens Have Reading Habits

Although sustain reading habits can cultivate teenagers to have better mental growth, improve rule-breaking behavior, and become an important role model in personal development, another research study does not reflect the real-world situation.

One research project conducted by the National Literacy (NLT) analyzed the behavior of around 115,000 children and young people aged five to 18. They published an article on The Guardian named “Only 10% of boys aged 14-16 read daily, National Literacy Trust” on 22 Feb 2026. NLT reported the following findings:

  • They found that around 46.9% of those aged eight to 11 enjoyed reading.
  • The figures dropped significantly to 29.5% aged 11-14 years old.
  • The figures dropped to 28.6% aged from 14 to 16 years old.

On the other hand, NLT also researched their daily reading routine and reported the following findings:

  • Around 31.1% aged eight to 11 had daily reading habits.
  • Trends fell dramatically to 17.1% aged from 11 to 14 and 14% aged from 14 to 16.

A similar reading habits analysis was commissioned by the Reading Agency of the UK, which published an article on The Guardian on 24 Jul 2024, titled “More than a third of UK adults have given up reading for pleasure”, demonstrating the deficiency in the reading habits of teenagers could affect to adults behavior. Therefore, cultivating sustainable and routine reading habits is important in teens’ personal development.

So, what’s the matter that causes teens to lose interest in reading books?

How is Reading Books Beneficial to Teens in Personal Growth

A good book can inspire your teens’ lives to be more brilliant. It engages teens to embrace their dreams and rewrite their models of reality. This process can lead them to embrace a more blissful life. Most importantly, it helps them to understand what is suitable for them.

Before I look forward to discussing what causes books are best for teens in their personal development, I want to share my story.

I am now 51. One of my wonderful working experiences was working for one month at an online bookshop named Buybookbook. Now, my interest in reading books remain passionate, as if something directed me in the right direction.

I truly love BuyBookBook has a cozy atmosphere, as working here gives me momentum every day, every time, and every momentum to go forward. Although I worked here for only one month, it is enough for me to have lifelong gratification.

My incredible experience in the Shop not only turned me into a crazy book lover and empowered and enlightened me to purse my interests in marketing but also there are many treasurable memories are unforgettable.

Without working in BuyBookBook, I don’t have a chance to read books This is Marketing and Purple Cow, written by Seth Godin, to learn what marketing is. I don’t have a chance to earn and learn two free online courses and certificates on Coursera. I don’t have a chance to know how to write contents in Cobyblogger. I don’t have a chance to learn and earn a series of certificates in SEO Strategy, Content Marketing, and Social Media Marketing, and so on, at HubSpot Academy. I don’t have a chance to be awareness of the importance of an email address in e-commerce. Most importantly, I don’t have a chance to know Zoe. Therefore, I want to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratification that I have worked with BuyBookBook in my life.

Therefore, what I can concluded that all books are not a product, all of them have a value. Indeed, reading books have the following advantageous to teens:

  • Developing positive thinking through reading
  • Reading is a tool for self-development

Developing positive thinking through reading

Reading books can promote a hardworking mindset in teens, showing how an author can be perseverant, make unremitting efforts, and eventually achieve a brilliant result. One of the excellent examples is the author of the famous children’s chapter books, the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling.

The content of Harry Potter is mainly about the fantasy things that happen between Harry Potter and other classmates at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It also includes using magic to solve problems in the wizarding world. From June 26, 1997 to July 21, 2007, Rowling published the seventh of the Harry Potter series:

  • 1997 – Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
  • 1998 – Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
  • 1999 – Harry Potter and the Prisoners of Azkaban
  • 2000 – Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
  • 2003 – Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
  • 2005 – Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
  • 2007 – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows

Although Rowling stopped writing, up to current, Harry Potter remains the most famous and compelling books for the children chosen. Many of the Rowling books were translated into film writing.

Besides films and books, many remarkable products of Harry Potter were established to satisfy different audience’s wants, needs, or desires. Products include LEGO Harry Potter, Monopoly Harry Potter, Lift & Flap Harry Potter and UNO Harry Potter, etc.

But, Rowling’s first Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, was rejected by 12 different houses before the manuscript was sent and finally accepted by Nigel Netwon, Bloomsbury Publishing in London, the CEO of Bloomsbury.

The adventure of Rowing is a brilliant, inspirational, and encouraging story to tell all teens: do not give up anything. Courage and persistence are required throughout the life journey. It can lead to your dreams and desires coming true.

Reading is a Tool for Self-Development

Reading books can enhance teens’ personal development by the following tactics:

  • Reading can take you to a magical space of imagination
  • Reading can entice teens to have innovative ideas
  • Reading can boost teens sense of awareness
  • Reading for better academic performance
  • Reading can boost cognitive skills
  • Reading for entertainment
  • Reading can cultivate a sense of well-being

Reading books can take you to a magical space of imagination

Why is Harry Potter popular for teens and young adults?

The Harry Potter series remains the top trend not only for children but also the young adults in the world’s book favorites in 2025. It is a fiction that includes teens growing up from childhood to adolescence, but it is full of adventuring and mystery. Instead of watching the plot in the movie, it is better to read the literal description in books, which could significantly boost your endless streams of imagination, making each character in the story more vivid. The environment becomes more brilliant and splendid, freeing memory without being limited by the movie visuals.

Reading can entice teens to have innovate ideas

Through reading different kinds of books, such as science, STEM and STEAM, pictures, biographies of animal and nature, adventures or teen’ fiction can significantly boost teens’ creatively and curiosity.

STEM and STEAM could entice teens to explore more. STEM means science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It is a composite knowledge that is widely recognized by parents and academics, but also for future workforce needs as it applies the fundamental requirements of using AI capabilities.

By incorporating arts to become STEAM, learning becomes systematic, structured, integrated, and practical. The arts in STEAM include visual and performing arts such as drawing, music, and design; creative elements in graphical, product, and fashion design; creative thinking in writing and storytellng capabilities.

Whether teens prefer STEM or STEAM, both could effectively enhance teens’ curiosity and creatively. They become proactive to learn more and explore more, driven by their own motivation. It is because the process and results from STEM or STEAM stimulate the teens’ thinking and makes them feel happy, and the happiness turns fuel to desire to explore more.

Reading can boost teens’ sense of awareness

Children’s picture books, like Your Planet Needs You! Brilliant Jobs to Protect Your World is a good book that can engage your teens with the author’s perspective and ideas. The topics highlight how teens can play an important role in environmental protection, not limited to focusing on scientists, farmers, carpenters, and fashion designers.

Indeed, environment protection is not focused on the present. It is important to give the next generation the chance to enjoy the same resources that we have been enjoying at the current moment.

It is an acknowledgement issue that achieving environment protection goals are difficult due to the opposition to the environmental policies on some continents and concerns about the economic impact on business.

Therefore, instead of thinking about what the government or companies can do to lend a helping hand, we can change our focus on our teens. We can instill environmental education during preschool stage.

Cultivating strong environmental protection habits during adolescence can lead to lifelong sustainable behavior. The goal is to use teens’ habits to influence others to adopt the same mindset in environmental protection. Illuminate life with life.

I don’t know whether the authors of the book, Elizabeth Laird, Will McDowall, and Paul Boston, the illustrator, may have the same ideas as me. But I deeply believe if teens can do their best to preserve the environment, we are all the same.

Reading for better academic performance

Usborne is one of my favorite books. Besides the compelling children’s picture books, Usborne also publishes series of non-fiction like “100 Things to Know Series” such as 100 Things to Know About Space and 100 Things to Know About Ocean and “Understanding Series” such as Understanding Economics and Understanding Psychology. Usborne won’t feel difficult to read even if you are a new to economics or psychology.

By applying majority of graphics, diagrams, charts, anime, and simple language in the contents, Usborne is becoming the book not only suitable for teens but also for adults, helping them to understand the knowledge easily.

Reading can boost cognitive skills

Many authors have insights to inspire the readers to have the same point of view as theirs. Each book, no matter what the contents – historical, scientific, fictional, non-fictional, pictorial, or biographical. They must have one or more core ideas to tell the readers what they can learn after they have read the books or guide and encourage readers to have a mission or vision for their future development.

Here is an example of the children’s picture books, and each of them has a dedicated topic that can inspire and educate teens to focus on personal development.

The “When I Am Series” and “When I Feel Series”, written and illustrated by Paula Bowles, which nurture teens to have positive behavior, are critical in teens personal, social, and emotional development. Each book has a theme, telling about one teens’ emotional behavior, like curiosity, bravery, creativity, kindness, playfulness, calmness, love, sadness, anger, scares, happiness, and surprise.

Curiosity, bravery, creativity, kindness, and playfulness are the important elements in nurturing the personal growth of teens, enabling them to have the courage to explore new ideas continuously and develop these into innovation in the world.

During the progress, play is an important part of teens’ development. This is because they can make progress through play and learn from success or failure in the learning process. They are curious to explore new things, brave in asking questions, solve the problems with their own capabilities, and the generous in sharing their ideas with other teens.

Calmness, love, sadness, anger, scared, happiness, and surprise are the emotional expressions about how they interact with people and the environment. These can help teens in empathy, resilience, appreciation, mindfulness, muchness, gratitude, forgiveness, peacefulness, grateful, and compassion to develop their personal personalities and the relation with other people.

Understanding the above emotional expressions are not only helpful for teens to maintain a positive mindset throughout their life but also helpful for them to know what they can do when they are facing unfavorable situation during their life journey.

Reading for entertainment

Graphics novels

Reading graphic novels can boost teens’ creativity, storytelling capabilities, and literacy skills, as they always have the following similarities:

  • Compelling stores
  • Funny and humorous personalities for each character
  • Fascinating and engaging visuals, videos, audios, textual, and graphical elements
  • Publishing as a series

Graphics novels are one type of bridging book that can preserve the reading enthusiasm and habits of teens without overwhelming them before they start to read complex adult novels.

The “Dog Man” and “Cat Kid Series”, written and illustrated by Dav Pilkey, may be one of the most famous graphic novels in the world.

For the “Dog Man Series”, I read Dog Man 13, 5, and 7. In Dog Man 13, there are lots of characters in the book. They include Dog Man, Big Jim, Little Jim, Momma and Daddy, Grey and Pubby, Grampa, Disco Grampa, Sarah, Bailey, Mrs. Pierce, and The Helper.

Each character in the story is funny and humorous. In addition, the compelling story causes Dog Man to become meatier, fascinating, and engaging teens to read. Even an adult like me can express a knowing smile when I am reading the book.

Children’s fiction

Besides reading graphics novels that can entertain kids and boost teens’ creativity, teens’ fiction targeting seasonal greeting topics, like Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’ Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Happy Birthday, expresses happiness and heartfelt feelings to other people.

The “Here I Come! Series,” written by D.J. Steinberg, is a teen fiction that focuses on teaching teens to share bliss and happiness with other people during different festivals. Moreover, in each of the “Here I Come!” series, there is a sticker page that relates to the theme of the book. There is no correct answer about where the location of the stickers is. It is a chance to explore teens’ imagination and creativity.

Light novels

If teens want to read light novels that include situational elements, fun, and adventure, “Press Start Series” may be a good choice. It not only includes situational and fun content but also gives a sense of feeling of going through different stage in the virtual video game world.

Most importantly, the content of each “Press Start Series” differs significantly from one another, causing them to become one of the famous light novels that can engage teens readers to chase after it. While I worked in the online bookshop, “Press Start Series” was one of the trending and recommended books for a long period of time especially for the Press Start 14.

One of the compelling reasons may be that Press Start 14 has more content. With Press Start 14 having 140 pages, compared to around 70-80 pages of the other series, Press Start 14 appears more adventurous, appealing to the desires of the young readers for more is better.

Quiz book

The quiz book is absent from using compelling, funny, and humorous characters; no exciting and mysterious plot and no compelling anime to attract teens’ eyeballs.

The 1% Club, published by BBC Studio, is a questioned book to explore teens’ logical thinking and develop common sense. The book has 450 questions, which are divided into 30 games. Each game has 15 different levels, from 90% to 1% difficulty. 90% is the easiest, while the 1% is the most difficult.

Here are some of questions taken from the book:

15% difficulty

Which of these times does not have the same pattern as the others?

A 02.12am

B 06.06am

C 4.16am

D 8.20am

Answer A – In a 24-hour time format the first two digits match the last two digits: 06:06, 16:16, 20:20 but 02:12am does not.

1% difficulty

If Katie unlocks her phone with the code 1120 and Ivy uses the code 0922, then what 4-digit code does Ellie use?

Answer: The codes are based on the letters the names sound like and their position in the alphabet. Katie = KT = 1120. Ivy = IV = 0922. Ellie = LE is the 12th letter of the alphabet and E is the 5th.

Therefore, the answer is 1205.

Interesting? This type of book is suitable for teens who have difficulty concentrating on reading lengthy content. By practicing logical and common-sense capabilities through asking interesting questions, teens would find this type of book more engaging, educational, and funny than spending time in the virtual world, like screening on social media or playing games.

To be honest, I got wrong for the above two questions. What about you?

Reading can cultivate a sense of well-being

Reading books can not only beneficial for teens but also being a good partner for parents. Some parents may find difficulty in cultivating teens’ reading habits. Why not start up by reading bedtime books with teens?

While you read a bedtime book with teens, it offers good parent-child time, better understanding of the teens’ true personalities, enhancing emotional communication, improving sleep quality, guiding teens to have critical thinking, increasing their interests in reading, and strengthening their vocabulary capabilities.

Tiger Tales has published many children’s bedtime books suitable for ages 2-5 to read, such as the “I Love You Series”, including I Love You as Big as the World, I Love You the Moon and Back , I Love You Brighter Than the Stars , I Love You Forever and a Day , I Love You, Grandma. They all express the passion of how big bears are everywhere and every time loving their little bear forever.

The content in the story is easy to understand, and the anime is engaging to read.

Taro Gomi, a Japanese writer, aims to write children picture books by using easy to understand content and simple anime to express complex human emotions.

The picture book, I Really Want to See You, Grandma is a sweet and relatable story describes the interesting adventures around a little girl and her grandma. One day, they decided to see each other at the same time. The story expresses a strong emotion of love, yearning, and courage when you have a desire to see someone or something. Failure may occur during the process. Keep the enthusiasm to go ahead and it will lead you to the destination.

Another Taro Gomi picture book, Run! Run! Run! is going to express the importance of running is to achieve fun instead of winning or beating the others during the running process. The purpose of running is what you can see and experience during the adventure. During the process, the charming scenes, interesting people and animals, and the surrounding environment are enough for you to have unforgettable memories.

Why Establish Reading Habits Matters

Roles of Parents, Teachers and Mentors in Encouraging Teens Reading

No matter what types of books you are reading – STEM, STEAM, science, environmental protection, historical, fictional, non-fictional, biographical, graphical, light novels, or quiz books – all you need to know is what teens love for their own intent. It is not appealing to mothers’, fathers’, teachers’, friends’, siblings’, or classmates’ decisions or trending books recommendation from social media or online platforms. It is important to know what you are truly love to read. That said, choosing the best books for teens is not for your own sake.

For example, Dog Man 14. In this series, there are lots of interesting plots happening between Big Jim and Grampa. By learning their conversations, we can learn how to use simple words to describe content and become funnier, more fascinating, and more interesting.

The Nina Peanut series, written by Sarah Bowie, is another example that combines both humor and education. It depicts the interesting life details of a little girl named Nina Peanut. The Nina Peanut: Epic World Tour Era (Book 3) is written about the adventures of Nina’s round-the-world trip, Sunshinery Island.

By applying not only the bright illustrations and engaging, heartwarming storylines between Nina and her school friends but also portrayals of their lives, the story is more appealing and engaging to young readers’ interests. It is the best book for teens who use learn to use scripts correctly while they are communicating with other people.

Some parents or teachers may have suspicions that those humorous fiction series, like Dog Man, Cat Kid Comic Club, or Agents of SUIT, could be beneficial to teens and appealing to teens’ interests. In conclusion, no matter what types of books you are reading, there must be some knowledge you can learn from them. It is important to know what can you learn from the book. So, what is the meaning of learning?

Referring to dictionary from Cambridge.org, the word “learning” has the following two meaning:

The activity of obtaining knowledge

Knowledge or a piece of information obtained by study or experience

Therefore, for teens, instead of gaining knowledge from experience, the most effective way to gain knowledge is reading.

I have massive experience in learning, ranging from free courses to paid courses. I can conclude there are two things that affect what teens can learn: one is the mentality, and the second is the tutor.

Rather than hoping teens can study in a decent school for better educational quality in teaching materials or mentor quality, it is important to cultivate their reading habits and a better learning mentality.

That said, it is not easy for teens to build up reading for sustainability. It required them to acquire courage and time. Therefore, how do you build up a study routine for teens?
