For adults, death is a disastrous, awful, hysterical experience. How can we explain death to children? It is imperative to learn not only the value and meaning of life and death, but also it is important to notice what they are gaining and losing from the deceased.
First, children need to understand death is natural to all living things but not an ultimate process. People, including parents and teachers, families, friends, or even pets and the environment, will die eventually. Instead of being suck in sadness, children need to focus on the life process. They can recall what they had happy memories of, the powerful wisdom that they had learned from the deceased.
Children can recall different seasons and festivals they had gathered with – Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Christmas Party, New Year, Easter, summer vacation, Thanksgiving Day, Halloweens, birthday party and Valentine’s Day – in addition to the feelings of those seasons they remembered.
To undermine the grief from the losing of the precious, it is imperative for children to cherish and celebrate every moment – seasons and festivals – with their loved ones.
